The Beginning. Milwaukee Tool was founded in 1924 by tool and dies manufacturer A.H. Petersen. At the end of World War I, Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company, asked Petersen to produce a portable and light, ¼-inch capacity power drill to replace the large, cumbersome units used on Ford assembly lines.

Milwaukee Tool was last sold in 2005 for $626.6 million to the Hong Kong-based Techtronic Industries, also known as TTI Group. The company is now a subsidiary of TTI Group alongside brands like AEG, Ryobi, Hoover, Dirt Devil, and Vax.

The Brewers' now-iconic “ball-in-glove” logo was the creation of Tom Meindel, a 30-year-old University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire art student who submitted one of 1,932 entries in a team-sponsored contest in the fall of 1977.

Techtronic purchased Milwaukee Electric Tool from Atlas Copco in 2005 and began integrating lithium-ion batteries into their lineup.

The first typewriter was invented by Milwaukee newspaperman and politician Christopher Latham Sholes in 1867. The rights for his invention were sold to Remington Company. The Reverend John W. Carhalt built a steam-propelled automobile called "the Spark" at Racine.

What is the origin of the name Milwaukee? ›

The City of Milwaukee arose from a collection of scattered settlements on a site familiar to the Native American tribes in what is now eastern Wisconsin. Local historians attribute the name to a word derived from the Potawatomi Tribe. The Potawatomis pronounced it Mahn-ah-wauk, meaning council grounds.
