  • I'm a landscaper in Zone 5b/6a (more toward 6-ish for the last decade) and planted Angelonia for the first time in 2019. We rotate different annuals yearly based on performance. This is maybe the least finicky & showiest annual I've ever grown. We planted it in 4 locations with different soil & growing conditions in each location. Across-the-board, the Angelonia (Angelface Pink, Blue & Wedgewood Blue) performed flawlessly. Our grower said we would need to deadhead to promote new growth but they never needed it and kept growing & flowering non-stop until frost without ever showing any decline.Location #1 - (my house: no irrigation/heavily amended clayish soil/half-day, a.m. sun/watered & heavily fertilized when dry approx. 2x month)Planted very late (July) - Grew to about 24" tall x 12" wide.Location #2 - (my house: no irrigation/clayish soil/HARSH half-day, p.m. sun/watered & heavily fertilized when dry approx. 2x month)Planted very late (July) - Grew to about 18" tall x 8" wide. Presumably from the heavier soil and non-stop drying out.Location #3 - (client house: DAILY irrigation/loamy soil/3 hours of afternoon sun/HEAVY liquid fertilization - ~twice WEEKLY at 10x-25x regular strength)Planted late-May - Grew to 30" tall x 18"+W. Grew into a non-stop, flowering wall of color.Location #4 - (client house: DAILY irrigation/loamy soil/HARSH half-day, a.m. sun at the edge of a hot patio/HEAVY liquid fertilization - ~twice WEEKLY at 10x-25x regular strength)Planted late-May - Grew to 36"+ tall x 24"+W. Basically a non-stop, flower-covered SHRUB until frost. 'Stem' grew to 2" caliper & woody. We had to dig them out vs. hand-pull, they were so rooted in.*Again, I do fertilize relentlessly and unreasonably beyond recommendations.

  • I have only had this plant for two and a half weeks, two plants actually, one in a planter and one in the garden. They look almost as nice as the day I planted them. We have had a terrible time with rabbits this year, destroying almost everything I have planted, but they have left this one alone. I am thrilled to see there are other colors, because next year I think I will be trying a lot more.

  • I tried the Angelface perfectly pink this summer and loved it! Two plants are blooming profusely as a back drop to my Sweet Autumn white clematis. I fertilized the plants regularly and watered them during dry times; extremely low maintenance. I will look for other colors of this plant to use in my summer landscape 2018.

  • This is one of my favorite annuals - I plant them every summer in my flower bed that is hit by the sun from morning to night and they always look great. My garden would not be complete without them. I love this new color too - they will compliment my Quick Fire and Invincible Spirit Hydrangeas.

  • I work at Hart Farm and I was given several Angelonia Hybrid to grown this summer. I planted the flowers in containers and placed them in a shade / sun environment. They were watered every day. They required very little attention, and needed to be groomed only when they became too heavy to hold themselves up. Harvesting longer stems created new growth and the mature blooms lasted several days in tall vases.

    FAQs

Do angelonia come back every year? ›

Angelonia is typically grown as an annual in most climates. However, it is a tender perennial in USDA hardiness zones 9 to 11, where it can survive year-round if protected from frost.

Do angelonia plants like sun or shade? ›

Plant angelonia in full sun to provide the energy it needs to bloom continuously. Plants that don't receive at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight will grow tall and leggy with fewer blooms.

Where is the best place to plant angelonia? ›

Plant angelonia in full sun and rich soil that has been amended with compost. Erect spires of angelonia fit nicely into the middle of a bed or border. It's also tall enough to act as a "thriller" in a container of mixed plants with similar light and water needs.

How do you take care of an angelonia hybrid? ›

Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy. Water when the top layer of soil is dry to the touch. Keep plants watered 2 to 3 times a week until established. Plants are somewhat drought tolerant once established.

How do you keep angelonia blooming? ›

Sun, sun and more sun. Angelface angelonia flowers grow and bloom best when planted in full sun, which means 6 or more hours of direct sunlight per day. See more full sun annuals.

What do you do with angelonia in the winter? ›

Winter prune Angelonia stems to 1" above the ground. The cool/cold air and soil temperatures keep the plants dormant. Treat pentas, lantana, and verbena the same way, as they are perennials too!

Is angelonia poisonous to dogs? ›

Angelonia has no known toxicity to pets or people but is not meant to be eaten. Plant toxicity is dose-dependent, and consuming large amounts may cause side effects.

Angelonias are a remarkably drought-tolerant and low-maintenance annual. Often called summer snapdragons, they resemble a snapdragon in their upright habit. Angelonias hold up better in heat and drought than snapdragons. They flower most of the spring, summer, and on into the fall with no deadheading required.

Why is my angelonia dying? ›

Your Angelonia might be in a thirst crisis. Underwatering leaves the soil bone-dry and roots gasping for moisture, resulting in wilted or curled leaves. When the soil is as dry as a desert, it's time to up the watering ante. Yellowing new growth and brittle leaves are your plant's plea for a drink.

How long do angelonia last? ›

The flowers bloom over a long period in summer - 4-6 weeks in temperate climates and even longer in zones 8-11 -- the blooming season is May to October in North Texas. Angelonia is evergreen with soft (not woody) stems and a bushy habit, and gets 12-18 inches tall with a spread of about 12 inches.

Why are the leaves on my angelonia plant turning yellow? ›

💧 Over/underwatering causes yellow leaves; let top inch of soil dry out first. 🌱 Soil and light balance is key; use well-draining mix and bright, indirect light. 📅 Consistent care prevents yellowing; establish a watering schedule and monitor plant health.

Will angelonia come back after a freeze? ›

The angelonia and pentas may or may not have made it, but we generally consider those tender plants temporary in the garden anyway. You may trim the plants back if you like, or simply leave well enough alone for now. As the weather warms, plants that are still alive will begin to resprout.
