I had been wanting to make a copycat version of Heluva Good! Bacon Horseradish Dip for a long time. It's my favorite of all of the Heluva Good dips! I tried to make it once last summer making the dip with refrigerated horseradish, but I didn't like it because it tasted to vinegary. I found a few recipes online that said to make sure the horseradish is well drained, but there wasn't really any liquid in it to drain.

I didn't try to make it again until just recently, but I had decided awhile ago to give up on the idea of using fresh horseradish and use store-bought horseradish sauce instead. There are a number of brands you can use. In my case, I used Dietz & Watson horseradish sauce, I think it's the best horseradish sauce brand.

Bacon Horseradish Dip

This Bacon Horseradish Dip is almost an exact match to the favorite! The only difference is that the bacon crumbles are a bit bigger than the store-bought. I made them as small as possible by crumbling the bacon in my small food processor instead of trying to do it by hand. After that, it's just the horseradish sauce, sour cream, and a little bit of onion powder, so easy!

I made it again last night for munching on during the Super Bowl, along with Spinach Artichoke Dip and Cajun Ranch Wings. Too bad we weren't having a party, it was just the three of us. Oh, well, that just means more for me!

Here are a few more copycat recipes I've made over the years:

Mozzarella Tomato and Artichoke Salad (Discontinued Walmart Recipe)

Noodles and Ground Beef Soup (Campbell's Copycat Recipe)

What do you dip in this dip? We are trying to figure out what it would go with? We tried potato chips and that was weird. We saw your pic of the tortilla chip, that was okay, but we still aren't sure that is the best pairing. The Heluva Good Dip site only suggests to pair it with Amber Lager. Funny!

Hi Suzy, we always dipped potato chips with ridges. I guess I must have been out of them the day I shot these photos. The dip would also be great with fresh vegetables.

I have a question. Not quite sure what you mean by fresh versus store bought. I’m my experience fresh would hand grated from a fresh horseradish root. Are you referring to “prepared horseradish” (some are refrigerated, some are not) versus a creamy horseradish sauce like something you typically would use straight out of the jar without having to mix it with something?

I'm so sorry I missed your question, however I did answer it in the post itself. I used creamy horseradish sauce.

I am giving this 5 stars because it’s a great base recipe. Very easy to adjust to your own taste. My personal opinion the horseradish is extremely overpowering. I added additional sour cream approximately 1-1 1/2 cups more and I only used 9.5 oz of horseradish sauce (ingelhoffers) next time I will use less horseradish and more bacon as well as the additional sour cream.

My Bacon Horseradish Chip Dip is just a little different. I use cream cheese, sour cream, horseradish sauce and hot English mustard. I also grind my bacon before frying it. And instead of onion powder I use finely diced Japanese green onions or finely diced spring onions.

Can you use just prepared horseradish? If so what would the amount be?

    • Bernadette says

Hi Darryl, I originally tried to make this recipe using prepared horseradish, but I didn't care for the texture it gave the dip. If you want to try it, I used two or three tablespoons.

I tried to make this on my own once and couldn't get the horseradish taste of Hell Of Good. I will be trying this very shortly. Thank you for posting this.

I followed the recipe exactly, and my hubby said that all he could taste was the horseradish sauce. I added another cup of sour cream and that helped get it closer to the hellava bacon horseradish dip. Since they don't sell it around us, this was a great substitute. Thanks!

Are you sure it is 12 ounces of horseradish. That it way to much. That's 1 1/2 cups.

    • Bernadette says

Hi Kathleen, it's horseradish sauce, not pure horseradish. I used Dietz and Watson brand but there are several different brands. It's like Arby's Horsey Sauce. You can copy this link into a new tab to see the ingredients. http://dietzandwatson.com/products/horseradish-sauce-3/

Sauce...not full-strength horseradish. I actually use packets of Arby's Horsey Sauce.
