Dessert Dogs: Fun Food for April Fools Day - Making Memories With Your Kids (2024)

March 30, 2014 by Erin

Do they look like hot dogs? Of course they do. But are they? Well, sort of. They’re hot dogs, but not the kind you eat for lunch. You eat these hot dogs for dessert!

I found the recipe for these over on The Seven Year Cottage. I changed it up just a little bit. They used Tootsie Rolls for the “hot dogs” but I decided I wanted to use brownies instead. Brownies aren’t really the color of hot dogs but you can’t really see them with all the “condiments” on top. Afterwards I decided using red velvet brownies instead would be perfect.

What do you think? Were you fooled? Did you think these were real hot dogs?

Hot Dogs for Dessert for April Fools Day

Ingredients

  • Twinkies
  • Brownies (we made up a batch of the boxed brownies)
  • Buttercream frosting
  • Red, yellow and green food coloring
  • Shredded coconut

Instructions

  1. To make the hot dog buns, remove Twinkies from packaging. Using a serrated bread knife, carefully slice the center of each cake as far down as possible without cutting through the bottom.
  2. For the hot dogs, squish some of the brownies together to make a "log" or hot dog shape. Place inside the bun.
  3. For the condiments, divide the frosting evenly in two mixing bowls. With food coloring, tint one bowl yellow for mustard, the other red for ketchup. Transfer each color of frosting into its own ziplock bag. Seal and snip a small amount from one corner of bag.
  4. The relish is coconut colored green. You can chop the coconut up in a food processor to make it smaller.
  5. Now assemble your dogs. Drizzle some "mustard" and "ketchup" over your hot dogs. Sprinkle on some "relish".
  6. Now serve and enjoy!

Fakin’ and Eggs… For Dessert???

I’m not much of a prankster. It’s not that I don’t think they’re funny. I just don’t do them. Well, not a lot at least =o) So for me, April Fools Day isn’t really a big deal. But it’s like I said in my St. Patrick’s Day post, “now that I’m a Mom I have […]

One of the best things I’ve done with my kids is taking them camping. I was a little afraid the first time we went. It was just me and my two, very young, children. We had so much fun. Now, 5 years later, it’s the highlight of our summer when we go camping. We load […]

Candy Sushi

My daughter’s pre-school class has been learning Japanese all year. It’s so cool to hear her speak and she is so proud when she comes home and tells me the new words she has learned. Meatloaf and Mashed Potato Cupcakes

Meatloaf and mashed potatoes are comfort food to me. I love them! My kids love them! And I love that my kids love them! But I wanted to kid it up a little. (We eat meatloaf a lot.) So I made my regular meatloaf. It’s nothing uber fancy. I buy the spice packet at the […]

Sloppy Joe Intestines

You’re going to think this is either gross or totally cool. Or maybe a little bit of both. Either way, it’s perfect for Halloween! And my kids thought it was totally grossly cool! Sloppy Joe Intestines! Or maybe it’s Sloppy Joe Colon. But that sounds too gross, even for me. I found the idea here […]

Yummy Mummy Cookies

The weather here in Oregon has been really off the past couple of months. It was stinkin’ hot for awhile and then summer kind of disappeared the end of August. I’m not real happy about it. I LOVE the nice weather. Well, let me rephrase that. I love wearing flip flops and shorts. My wardrobe […]

Edible Fish Bowl

I remember making this years and years ago for a friend’s children. It was pretty cool (I thought) so my kids and I thought we would make it again for some friends. It’s super easy and it’s fun to do! What you will need: * any kind of clear bowl. We used a fish bowl […]
