The Earth Shard is used to upgrade the Eikonic weapon Levinbolt into the Eikonic weapon Grindstone. The Grindstone crafting recipe will unlock during the sub-main quest Getting to Work, which you can pick up during the Bolts from the Blue main quest.
Grindstone is the fourth Eikonic weapon you can craft, which requires three materials—the Levinbolt blade, an Earth Shard, and three Meteorite. With these materials, you can craft Grindstone at The Black Hammer in The Hideaway after completing the Getting to Work step of the Bolts from the Blue main story quest.
