What does the word Kringle mean? ›

A Kringle is a Northern European pastry. It is a sweet pastry made of layers of flaky, buttery dough, with a filling and toppings in a wide variety of flavors.

Kringle officially became Wisconsin's State Pastry on June 30th, 2013. We are proud to be a part of Wisconsin's heritage and to continue the tradition of baking Kringle in Racine, Wisconsin!

How to Serve Kringle? The Danish serve Kringle at room temperature or warmed, cut into slices, and usually with a glass of milk or a coffee. Of course, whether you warm it or not, and how you slice it, may depend on how hungry you are or what company you keep.

How long will Kringle stay fresh? Kringle stay fresh a long time although we recommend 7 days at room temperature, 10 days in the refrigerator, or 6 months in the freezer.

Kringle started out as the Nordic version of a pretzel, possibly made as early as the 13th century by Roman Catholic monks, especially in Denmark. Its name derives from the Old Norse “kringla” meaning a circle or oval. Danish immigrants brought the treat with them when they settled in Racine in the late 19th century.

Originally, Kris Kringle was derived from 'Christkindl', the German word for Christ Child. Today, it's celebrated as a gift exchange occasion that renews bonds between family and friends, and as a moment to solidify connections between usually busy co-workers – like a Kris Kringle office party.

Today, Kringle is the official state pastry of Wisconsin, and shipped across the nation. We're proud of our Kringle—it's all we do, and we want to share them with you, because with us… ”It's Not Just a Treat, It's a Tradition.”

All of these names derive from traditional gift-bringers: the American custom is named after Santa Claus, or St Nicholas (Poland and Ukraine), while Chris Kindle and Kris Kringle are both corruptions of the original name of the Austrian gift-bringer Christkindl, which means the "Christ Child".

Pretzels were introduced by Roman Catholic monks in the 13th century in Denmark, and from there they spread throughout Scandinavia and evolved into several kinds of sweet, salty or filled pastries, all in the shape of kringle.

Kringle can be left out on counter for 3-4 days. If you are not going to consume within that period, place in freezer in plastic packaging. Freeze for up to 6 months. To warm: Heat oven to 350° and put Kringle (unfrozen) in for 3 minutes.
