Do employers care about micro-credentials? ›

If you pay much attention to higher education or workforce training, odds are you've seen excited talk about the promise of microcredentials. Earlier this year, a survey of employers reported that 95 percent think it's a good thing if their employees are earning microcredentials.

Comparably, a 2023 Coursera survey – which included responses from nearly 5,000 students and employers across 11 countries – found that among U.S. employers, 86% agreed that earning an industry microcredential strengthens a candidate's job application, and 39% have hired at least one candidate with a microcredential.

It typically takes about 10-15 hours to complete the requirements to earn a micro-credential.

They are typically packages of 3 or 4 industry-focused college-credit bearing courses. Microcredentials demonstrate competency, proof of staying current in one's field, and boosts skills and resumes.

The micro credential provides acknowledgement of the growing knowledge of the practitioner and can either be completed as a step to the professional certificate as stated above or completed for its own merits without advancement to a certificate—it is considered a stand-alone designation.

One of the primary disadvantages of micro-credentials is that they are not yet as readily accepted as the more traditional college degree. While some employers may be familiar with micro-credentials and value them as highly as they would a traditional two- or four-year degree, many organizations are not.

Your microcredential course title can be listed under education, “other professional skills” or “training and certifications” on your print resume.

Currently, NEA micro-credentials are certified by NEA's Center for Great Public Schools and Digital Promise.

While other terms are often used interchangeably to refer to microcredentials (e.g., digital badges, digital credentials, online certificates, alternative credentials, nano-degrees, micromasters, master tracks, and specializations), they do not always meet the above requirements.

A micro-credential can be earned by demonstrating competency in a specific area. The badge is simply a visual rep- resentation of that credential to display as part of your personal digital file or place on your curriculum vitae.

ICTC's March 2024 report Accelerating Canada's Workforce outlines a framework of five must-have elements for digital economy micro-credentials in Canada: (1) connection to labour market needs, (2) proof of mastery, (3) validation process, (4) portfolio-based learning, and (5) flexible delivery.

Characteristics of Micro teaching

Only one skill is practised. Size of the class is reduced and thus the number of students is just 5 to 7. Duration of each micro lesson is 5 to 7 minutes.

Micro-credentialing is seen by both individuals and higher education providers as a legitimate means of evidencing not only learning or competence credited by other institutions, but also that attained in the workplace or in other forms of informal learning.

Microlevel analyses might include one-on-one interactions between couples or friends. Or perhaps a sociologist is interested in how a person's perception of self is influenced by his or her social context. In each of these cases, the level of inquiry is micro.

What's a Micro-Credential? Micro-credentials are much smaller than a degree and even smaller than a minor or a certificate. They take less time to complete and focus on enhancing or updating a particular skill set. They are fast, flexible, reputable, and customizable for individual needs.
