Why Should You Make This Recipe

What I love most about mascarpone cheese is how it adds richness, but a mild and creamy flavor to any dish. It’s versatile and as easy to work with as cream cheese. Some of my favorite recipes from the blog that use mascarpone cheese are Maple Mascarpone Cheesecake, Tiramisu Ice Cream and Pumpkin Bourbon Tiramisu. I am so excited to add this mascarpone frosting to the blog. I know you’ll love it too because:

  • You want a frosting that’s easy to make. This mascarpone whipped cream is as easy to make as actual whipped cream. In fact, it tastes like a richer, creamier whipped cream. Simply add everything to a mixer and whip to light and fluffy perfection.
  • You want a frosting that’s not overly sweet. Sometimes you need a frosting recipe that doesnt add too much sweetness to a cake or cupcakes.

Ingredients

This whipping cream with mascarpone recipe requires only a handful of ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need.

Mascarpone Frosting (Mascarpone Whipped Cream) - Olives + Thyme (2)

Gather mascarpone cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract and heavy cream.

Substitutions

Here are my recommended substitutions to make this wonderfully delicious brown butter frosting.

  • Mascarpone Cheese: Normally I would recommend mascarpone cheese as a substitute for cream cheese in certain circ*mstances. For this icing recipe, mascarpone cheese must be used. I personally love using the one from Trader Joes.
  • Heavy Cream: This helps to provide structure and fluffiness for the frosting.
  • Vanilla Extract: This ingredient adds a nice background flavor and is highly recommended. Vanilla bean paste is a good substitute.
  • Powdered Sugar: I like using Wholesome Organic powdered sugar. If you need a lower sugar powdered sugar alternative, I recommend Swerve or Lakanto.

How To Make

Mascarpone Frosting (Mascarpone Whipped Cream) - Olives + Thyme (3)
  1. Place a mixing bowl and whisk attachment in the fridge or freezer for about 15 - 20 minutes before making the frosting recipe. On low, whisk the mascarpone cheese until smooth. Once smooth, mix in the vanilla extract and powdered sugar until well combined.
  2. Once all the sugar has been added, mix in the heavy cream slowly on low speed. Once all the heavy cream has been added, increase the mixer speed to medium for about 2 - 3 minutes or until the frosting is light and fluffy. Transfer the frosting to a storage container or use to top cakes, cupcakes, cookies or brownies.

How To Store, Freeze and Thaw

  • Store: Mascarpone frosting is best when used the same day it is made. This mascarpone whipped cream frosting holds its shape well once piped onto cupcakes or layered onto a cake. Desserts with mascarpone frosting can be left out in a cool room for up to two hours.
  • Freeze and Thaw: Technically this whipped frosting with mascarpone cheese can be frozen and thawed, but the frosting will be grainy.

M’s Expert Tips

  • Chill the mixing bowl. This helps the heavy cream whip more quickly and easily.
  • Keep the ingredients cold. This frosting recipe is best made with cold mascarpone cheese and cold heavy cream.
  • Keep it cool. Like whipped cream or cream cheese frosting, this whipped mascarpone frosting should be stored in the fridge.

FAQs

Can you over whip mascarpone frosting?

Yes, it is very easy to over whip mascarpone cheese. I recommend mixing the cheese as a little as possible to achieve the recommended texture of the whipped mascarpone frosting. If you do over mix and the mascarpone becomes grainy, add heavy cream a tablespoon at a time and mix on low until the mascarpone becomes smoother.

Why is my mascarpone frosting runny?

This is most likely from overmixing the mascarpone or heavy cream. Make sure to stop mixing once medium-stiff peaks form.

How long can mascarpone frosting sit out at room temperature?

Depending on the temperature of the room, any baked good with mascarpone cheese should sit out at room temperature for no longer than 2 - 4 hours.
