Today's Wordle answer (game #1171)

NYT Wordle today — answer and hints for game #1171, Monday, September 2 (3)

  • NYT average score: 3.9
  • My score: 4
  • WordleBot's score: 3
  • Best start word performance*: PLACE (6 remaining answers)
  • My start word performance: ALONG (149)

* From WordleBot's Top 20 start words

Today's Wordle answer (game #1171) is… CAMEL.

It was good to get back on target after yesterday's tricky MUSHY (see below), although my score of 4/6 was still slightly higher than the average, which WordleBot says is currently at 3.9.

I still had a fairly tough time of it, though, with my opening word ALONG – chosen at random – again proving less than ideal and leaving 149 possible solutions. That was, inevitably, a long way behind those words which started with a C – CRANE left 13, for instance, CRATE 12 and CARTE and CATER only 10.

I thought that TRAIL was a good second guess, as it put the A and L in very common positions. However, it was a little unlucky; I only succeeded in turning the L green, and didn't add any new letters into the mix.

I still had 15 options at this stage, but my third guess was much more successful. I played LACES, which I knew couldn't be right – Wordle doesn't do plurals – but which enabled me to include the C, S and E. You might wonder why I included an L at the start when I already knew it was green at the end – but that was to guard against the answer being LABEL or LAPEL.

LACES did the trick, giving me a yellow C and green E, and confirming that the answer had to be CAMEL. So I played that next for my four.

Yesterday's Wordle hints (game #1170)

In a different time zone where it's still Sunday? Don't worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1170, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had a vowel in one place.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

  • The first letter in yesterday's Wordle answer was M.

M is a middling letter when it comes to starting a word. It sits 10th in the rankings, with 107 occurrences in the 2,309 answers.

  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday's Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday's Wordle was Y.

Y is the second most common ending letter in the game, behind only E. In total, 364 Wordle answers end with a Y.

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1170)

NYT Wordle today — answer and hints for game #1171, Monday, September 2 (4)

  • NYT average score: 4.5
  • My score: 5
  • WordleBot's score: 5
  • Best start word performance*: TASER (26 remaining answers)
  • My start word performance: ARROW (722)

* From WordleBot's Top 20 start words

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1170) was… MUSHY.

I'm not a MUSHY person by any stretch of the imagination, and neither am I likely to become one after a fairly disastrous game that left me with my first five since ENSUE at the start of the month (although I did score a six with FILET a few weeks back).

In my defence, MUSHY is a very tricky answer, with an average score of 4.5 at the time of writing. That's probably because it's one of those words where there are lots of similarly spelled alternatives: BUSHY, CUSHY, MUSHY, PUSHY and GUSHY if you had the last four letters. And if you had the -US-Y bit but not the other two, there were lots more including the likes of FUSSY, HUSKY and DUSTY.

t's also an answer where most of the popular start words didn't help at all – because very few include M, U, H or Y. That led to results of the likes of 356 remaining answers for CRANE and a lower-but-still-too-high-for-comfort 54 for STARE.

My opener was worse still – because my random word generator gave me ARROW, which was a zero-letter starter and which left a whopping 722 possible solutions.

Things didn't improve much on my second guess. I went with STILE – reasoning that packing the word with common letters was my best bet – yet only uncovered a single yellow S.

I still had 14 possibles at this stage, but things did improve on my third guess. I went with HUSKY, because I could see that the -US-Y format was fairly likely now, and it would enable me to rule in/out both USKY and USHY words.

The latter scenario played out, but I wasn't safe yet – because I still had five words to choose from. I faced a potential failure now, so had to play it safe with guess number four and went with PLUMB. This would point the way to PUSHY (P), MUSHY (M) or BUSHY (B), and though I might still have had a choice of CUSHY or GUSHY I figured that both were less likely.

As it happened, the M turned yellow, meaning the answer had to be MUSHY and I escaped with a 5/6.

What is Wordle?

If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.

We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it's in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It's played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times' Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle's list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won't be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
