Caramelizing the onions.

I like using large yellow onions as they caramelize a little better than white ones, plus I think they taste better. First peel and slice your onions about a half inch thick. The thick slices are important as they are being used for buns.

Coat the onion slices with olive oil and season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of sugar. In a pan on medium low heat add a tablespoon of olive oil and cook the onions. Be careful not to flip the onions too much as you want them to stay together.

Cooking them on medium low also ensures the onions are cooked through instead of raw in the middle. If your onions aren’t getting soft add a little water to the pan and cover with a lid for a few minutes. The steam will help break them down.

Once the onions are cooked all the way through and have a nice brown caramelized color on the outside, set them aside. This will probably take between 20-30 minutes.

Making the burger sauce.

Making the sauce couldn’t be any easier. This sauce is very similar to my homemade Big Mac sauce and just as tasty.

Simply combine mayonnaise, relish, ketchup, yellow mustard, white sugar, apple cider vinegar and Worcestershire sauce. Whisk all of the ingredients together and set aside. This sauce will be used for the burger and can be served on the side for dipping.

Making onion wrapped Flying Dutchman burgers.

To assemble each burger, stack two patties together on top of one yellow onion. Then add a spoonful of burger sauce and top with one more onion slice. This burger can get a little messy so hold on for dear life as you eat it.

You can also wrap the bottom of each assembled burger with a little parchment paper like they do at in-n-out burger to keep things a little cleaner.

What’s the best way to eat the Flying Dutchman burger?
