Our soft pretzels are always best when they are fresh, but can be kept fresh or frozen.
Fresh soft pretzels can be enjoyed room temperature with butter, sliced meat or cheese, or you can warm them briefly in 400 F oven for 5 minutes, mist with water and salt before heating
Storing Pretzels
Pretzels, if unsalted, can be stored at room temperature, in an air tight bag for about 4 days, and frozen for up to 3 months. If this is what you’re interested in, ask for salt on the side!
Thawing Pretzels
Thaw unsalted pretzels, until soft, at room temperature for about 30 minutes. A microwave can be used to speed up the thawing process (30 seconds per pretzel).
Refrigerate for a Little Longer: Wrapped pretzels can be refrigerated for up to a week. Reheating for Freshness: Bring back that oven-fresh taste by reheating your pretzels in the oven or air fryer.
The Catholic Church claims that a monk in Northern Italy created pretzels by using left-over dough that was originally made for Lent. He created the signature pretzel shape because it was meant to symbolize a child praying with his arms folded across his chest.
The pretzel was invented by European monks in the early Middle Ages, possibly in the 6th or 7th century. The monks used the pretzel's distinctive knot shape to represent the Holy Trinity, with the three holes in the pretzel symbolizing the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Freezing pretzels is a fantastic way to extend their shelf life and ensure you always have a delicious snack on hand. To freeze your pretzels: Once completely cooled, wrap each pretzel in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Transfer wrapped pretzels to a storage bag or container, and write the date on it.
The traditional pretzel shape is a distinctive symmetrical form, with the ends of a long strip of dough intertwined and then twisted back onto itself in a particular way (a pretzel loop or pretzel bow).
Christians of the day prayed with their arms folded across their chests, each hand on the opposite shoulder. It occurred to him that he could twist the leftover dough from the bread into this shape and use it as a treat for the children to recite their prayers.
Refrigerating soft pretzels can turn them soggy and affect their flavor. Freezing pretzels, however, will help retain their texture and softness. You can freeze most food that's properly stored indefinitely, and the food will still be safe to eat. The only issue is the food's quality and taste will suffer.
Purchase a ceramic bread warmer at a kitchen supply store or online. Heat the warmer in the microwave for about a minute and place it in a basket using an oven mitt. Cover the bread warmer with a clean dish cloth and place your warm pretzels on top of it to serve.
How can you keep soft pretzels fresh for more than a day? Place a slice or two of white bread in a bag with your soft pretzels in order to keep them pliable for another few days.
