However, it is possible to make some educated guesses. In this article, we will discuss the current state of IPv4, the factors affecting its continued use, and an estimation of its lifespan.
The Current State of IPv4
As of 2023, IPv4 is still widely used globally despite its address resources being nearly exhausted. Reasons for this include the costs of upgrading network infrastructure, compatibility issues, and a lack of awareness about the benefits of IPv6. In more developed countries and among large internet service providers (ISPs), the transition to IPv6 is progressing at a faster pace. Some of these providers already offer a significant portion of their services based on IPv6. However, the process is slower in developing countries and among smaller ISPs.

In the long term, perhaps within 10-15 years or even longer, the majority of internet connections will use IPv6, rendering IPv4 obsolete. However, due to the variety of factors influencing the adoption of new technologies, the exact time when IPv4 will become a thing of the past remains unclear.

While it is difficult to pinpoint an exact timeframe for IPv4's obsolescence, it is evident that the technology's days are numbered. As IPv6 becomes more widely adopted, organizations and individuals should begin planning their transition to the newer protocol to ensure seamless connectivity and continued growth in the digital world.
