Three new restaurants from the beloved fast food chain “Raising Cane’s” have opened in New York City. — in Manhattan on 20 Astor Place, in Times Square at 1501 Broadway and in Brooklyn on 1523 Kings Highway. With many fast food joints opening frequently and unhealthy food spreading swiftly, it is imperative to take a step back and evaluate how to safely enjoy a meal at a fast food restaurant.
I had the opportunity to have lunch at the Cane’s in Manhattan and many of the glaring positives and negatives became present.
The biggest positive of the entire fast food industry is its accessibility. I walked in, placed my order, sat down and got my “box combo” as fast as I could say “Cane’s Sauce.” The process of putting in the order to the meal being put on a plate in front of me took about five minutes.
The food was also delicious: four crispy chicken tenders, a mountain of fries, scrumptious Texas toast and the now iconic Cane’s dipping sauce being the capper to this meal. It was everything you would want out of lunch, a filling and satisfying experience for only $15.
Despite its efficiency, there is a major caveat to this convenient way to get food. The meal I had at Cane’s was 1,250 calories, already over half of the 2,000 calories that should be eaten in a day. More specific nutritional facts show how unhealthy a meal at Cane’s really is. While a box combo contains 61 grams of protein, the food is rich in sodium, cholesterol and fats, having 2130 mg of sodium, 170 mg in cholesterol and 68 grams in total fats. Meaning, in one meal you are getting 105% of your total fat intake, 57% for cholesterol and roughly 90% of daily sodium intake.
While the food is delicious and easy to get your hands on, it is important to proceed with caution when dining at any fast food place, especially Cane’s. It doesn’t mean you must completely cut out fast food, but it is something that should be enjoyed in moderation. Choosing meals from Cane’s, or any other fast food establishment in favor of more healthy alternatives and limiting fast food consumption as a whole is the best way to go about modern dining.

The fast food chain currently has seven other locations in New York City, with the closest one to Columbia currently located at 124 W. 125th St. Raising Cane's is rapidly expanding, having opened 100 locations in 2023 alone, including a flagship location in Times Square.

The restaurant grew in popularity after the praise began over their chicken tenders and home made sauce. Raising Cane's began to pop up all over my social media, including Instagram and TikTok in the last few months.
The company originally announced plans to enter the Garden State in 2022. The Cherry Hill location is the third of seven planned Cane's spots in New Jersey. Cane's will open in Deptford (1860 Deptford Center Rd.) sometime in 2024 although an exact date has yet to be announced.
Canes provide stability on uneven or slippery surfaces and help seniors with balance issues when walking. The main con of using a cane is that it requires upper body strength. It may be difficult for seniors with limited mobility or those with certain medical conditions to use a cane.
Some people may "self-treat" as canes are easily accessible and do not require a prescription before being purchased. This increases the risks of falls, especially in elderly patients. There is also a risk of musculoskeletal injuries or postural adaptations if individuals use / hold the assistive device incorrectly.
The Cane's chicken sandwich is higher in calories, protein, total fat, and saturated fat than Chick-fil-A's chicken sandwich. Based on these differences, my recommendation would be to choose the Chick-fil-A sandwich over the Cane's for a healthier option.
In the early 1700's, the first settlers in America used canes as a status symbol of wealth and refinement. Over time, the Puritans passed laws which wouldn't allow extravagant dress or displays of wealth. This, in turn, altered the perception and appearance of the canes and walking sticks used.
Quality You Can Count On. Our certified “Bird Specialists” hand batter premium chicken that's marinated for 24 hours, then cooked to order for fingers that are hot and tender down to the last bite.
Going against the social codes for carrying these highly fashionable and imminent accessories, such as carrying a cane (walking stick) under one's arm, was considered to be an extreme violation of genteel manners. Today, walking sticks are mainly used as hiking accoutrements.

Likewise, fried food is riddled with grease, which can lead to acne flare-ups and clogged arteries. Additionally, you're not likely to find anything nutritious in your Raising Cane's meal apart from the shreds of carrots and cabbage in the coleslaw.
Raising Cane's is famous for its signature sauce. Recipes online suggest it's made from ingredients including mayonnaise, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
