The vital statistics of a population are statistics such as the number of births, deaths, or marriages which take place in it. Someone's vital statistics, especially a woman's, are the measurements of their body at certain points, for example at their chest, waist, and hips.

These data are provided through contracts between NCHS and vital registration systems operated in the various jurisdictions legally responsible for the registration of vital events – births, deaths, marriages, divorces, and fetal deaths.

NVSS is used to produce important health indicators from birth and death data, including teen births and birth rates, cesarean delivery, preterm birth and infant mortality rates, leading causes of death, and life expectancy.
