What Is the SilverSneakers Program? | Medicare & Medicare Advantage Info, Help and Enrollment? ›

If you have a Medicare Advantage or Medigap plan, your health insurance may include a free fitness membership for adults 65+ called SilverSneakers. A SilverSneakers membership includes access to roughly 14,000 recreation centers, churches, senior communities, and other neighborhood locations across the nation.

Silver Sneakers is a free program available free to older adults through eligible Medicare Advantage plans. The program provides access to more than 15,000 online exercise classes, on-demand workout videos, and fitness centers across the United States.

Medicare and SilverSneakers. SilverSneakers is a health and fitness program that provides gym access and fitness classes for older adults. Original Medicare doesn't cover SilverSneakers, but some Medicare Part C and Medigap plans do. Exercise is important for all age groups, including older adults.

The most common reason for an ineligible result is your health care plan does not participate in SilverSneakers. Contact your provider to let them know you value this benefit, or consider switching to a plan that does offer SilverSneakers during the yearly open enrollment period.

Differences between Renew Active and SilverSneakers

Renew Active offers more fitness locations, personalized fitness plans, brain challenges, and online hobby and education classes. Only UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans may provide a Renew Active membership, but many insurance carriers offer SilverSneakers.

UnitedHealthcare Medicare plans that once covered SilverSneakers membership have replaced that coverage with a program called Renew Active. Renew Active is similar to SilverSneakers but also incorporates brain health activities.

The SilverSneakers fitness program, offered at no additional cost to seniors on eligible Medicare plans, helps you get active and connect with others. It includes live online fitness classes, on-demand videos, and access to thousands of gyms across the country.
