Do butter beans need a lot of water? ›
Be sure to water evenly and make sure the beans receive 2 inches (5 cm.) of rain per week. Butter beans do not grow well in dry conditions. However, also be aware that too much water will cause the bean pods to be stunted.
Why are my lima beans flowering but not producing? ›
Lima beans grow best when temperatures are between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. They also require 1 inch of water per week (either from rain or irrigation) during blossoming and pod development. Hot, dry conditions during blossoming may cause many of the flowers to drop off without setting pods.
Do butter beans need support? ›
Size: This is a medium bean – grows to around 60cm tall. It will need a short stake or trellis for support.
Can you eat butter beans in the pod? ›
Lima/butter beans grow in pods that are removed before eaten. They can be eaten “green/fresh” when they are young. Or left on the plant to mature more and harvested for “dried” beans. If you're purchasing or preparing freshly shucked butter beans it's important to remember NOT to eat the beans before cooking.

This butter bean pod is ready to pick. You want to pick butter beans when the pods look and feel plump with beans, and when the pod is still a bright green color. In the bottom picture, the pod is flat and does not show any signs of butter beans yet. Give this pod a few more days to fill out.

The main causes of failure to set pods are:
Lack of moisture at the roots. Poor soil or growing conditions, such as acid soils below pH 6.5, pest or disease problems, frost damage, lack of nutrients or organic matter. Lack of pollinating insects, perhaps because of cold, wet or windy weather.
Why are my beans flowering but not fruiting? ›
Soil is too wet - Bean plants in soil that is too wet will produce blooms but will not produce pods. The wet soil prevents the plant from taking up the right amount of nutrients from the soil and the bean plants will be unable to support the pods.

Once established, beans generally will not require fertilizing and will generate their own nitrogen. However, if the leaves of young plants are pale this is an indication of nitrogen deficiency and starts can be fertilized with with fish emulsion or other natural nitrogen rich fertilizer.
