Why Skippy Peanut Butter Is the Best (2024)

When we started throwing around ideas about which products and categories should be considered for the BA Seal of Approval, there was a lot of healthy debate about ingredients and brands. Throughout all the discussions, though, there were a few things that came up again and again as a no-brainer. One of those things? Peanut butter. No tearful arguments based on childhood favorites here: Skippy, we all know, is perfect for baking.

"Basically, Skippy has the perfect emulsion for a pastry chef," says Bon Appetit assistant food editor
Alison Roman, who has worked at restaurants and bakeries in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York City. "When baking, you don't want your pastry cream, cookie dough, or frosting to split or break. Think of when fat and water separate, like in a natural peanut butter when you have the layer of oil on top--or a broken mayonnaise or ganache. Skippy would never do that; it's extremely reliable. Some pastry chefs make their own peanut butter, which is fine if you're making pralines or a chunky peanut butter cookie. But for any other peanut butter baking need, making your own would be playing with fire."

Other reasons to love this one? Some natural peanut butters can taste a little raw, but Skippy has an authentic flavor of roasted peanuts. And it's a little saltier than its competitors, too, which doesn't hurt. Go on, have a taste, eat it straight from the jar--we won't tell anyone.
