What should a bricklayer wear? ›

Many bricklayers prefer bib and brace overalls over trousers which is why our bib & brace overalls offer all of the same features. Our bib and brace overalls will cover your back in all kinds of work where a top and trousers might slide away from each other when you bend.

Stonemason men wear breeches or tight drawers (made of mostly leather), tight tunics or doublets, and capes or cloaks of coarse brown woolen. The tunic was worn down around the waist held by a belt where knifes, purses, and sometimes working tools were held.

Bricklayers and stonemasons do similar work. They both create durable surfaces and structures, such as walkways, floors, walls, and fireplaces. A major difference is that stonemasons work with stone rather than brick. They may work with natural cut (granite or marble) or artificial stone (concrete or marble chips).

Nearly always work outdoors, unless they are installing a fireplace or industrial furnace indoors. Wear kneepads, gloves, or hard hats on a daily basis. Are regularly are exposed to hazardous situations and equipment, such as when using saws. Are occasionally exposed to contaminants, such as chemical mortar removers.

Safety goggles/glasses – the use of eye protection can stop harmful debris from entering the eyes such as flying cement particles or mortar dust which can cause serious eye injuries or even blindness. Hearing protection – construction sites are loud and bricklayers are often exposed to much of this noise.

If you want to build brick walls then you have to start with the corners, and the bricklayers' mantra - as I mentioned last week - is "level, gauge, plumb, straighten".

Requirements for protective clothing depend on the particular hazards a worker is exposed to. While wet-cutting masonry units onsite, this mason wears a hard hat, protective goggles, and rubber gloves that protect against electric shock.

Physical strength.

Masonry workers should be able to lift more than 50 pounds. They carry heavy tools, equipment, and other materials, such as bags of mortar and grout.

The ambient temperature must be between 5°C and 30°C throughout the bricklaying and hardening process. If you are laying bricks at a temperature above 0°C, keep an eye on the weather forecast for the coming night. If there is a risk of the temperature falling below -3°C, stop bricklaying in good time.

Physical demands – being a bricklayer is physically demanding. They will be on their feet for most of the working day, and the role will involve manual handling. There may also be work at height. Individuals will need a good level of physical fitness.
