History of Dutch pancakes
The history of ‘Hollandse Pannenkoeken’ or Dutch pancakes is quite the story to tell. The first fun fact to share with you is that Dutch pancakes are not from the Netherlands, but from China and Nepal. This recipe had buckwheat as the main ingredient and was first used in the 12th century. The cultivation of buckwheat in Europe dates back to the 13th century, in the Netherlands and Belgium. Back in the day, they had a different recipe. Pancakes consisted of buckwheat, water, milk, and melted butter. This batter is now used for the French crepes. After some time, the Dutch started making their own pancake batter. This batter consisted of more flour and milk and the Dutchies also added eggs.

Pancakes have been around forever. Eventually, more and more varieties appeared, everyone with local ingredients and authentic tastes. At some point in time, pancakes were also frequently used on special occasions. For example, the British would eat their pancakes just before fasting for Easter. This day is called Shrove Tuesday.

Each country has its signature pancake. Well, almost every country. America has its famous fluffy and stacked pancakes, and the Dutch have pannenkoeken and poffertjes. Germany and Austria have Kaiserschmarrn and the French have their crêpes. PANCAKES Amsterdam has a monthly special, which is always a worldly pancake with a special story.
