Mouse Life Cycle Stages

A typical female mouse can birth between five and 10 litters per year. She can mate immediately after giving birth, meaning mice can birth a second litter in as little as 25 days after the first. This cycle continues until the mouse dies.

A mouse can get pregnant immediately after giving birth and can reproduce anywhere from 5 – 10 times per year! Because they can get pregnant so quickly, it isn't uncommon to see litters only 25 days apart.

The mouse estrus cycle is very short, typically repeating every 4-5 days long and consists of 4 stages: Proestrus (pre-ovulation and active growth) Estrus (period of receptivity or “heat” and ovulation lasting about 12-15 hours)

Domestic mice typically only live for 1–3 years. Their wild counterparts have an even shorter lifespan; some estimates are 3–6 months and only rarely up to 18 months. This extremely brief life is due to predation, extreme environmental conditions, lack of veterinary care, and inconsistent food sources.

The estrous cycle in female mice is typically 4-5 days long and is divided into four phases: proestrus, estrus, metestrus and diestrus. Females can only become pregnant when ovulation occurs (during estrus). Estrus lasts only about 15 hours, and ovulation usually occurs during the middle of the dark cycle.

High-resolution ultrasound biomicroscopy is an effective and efficient tool for imaging: 1) Whether a mouse is pregnant; 2) What gestational stage the mouse has reached; and 3) Whether there are intrauterine losses.

After about two weeks of age, the nipples of females are typically visible, whereas the nipples of males are not. In adults, the scrotum of the male (and testes, if they are everted) is an obvious marker. For pre-adults, orient the cage so that the bars run left-right and put the mouse on the wire rack of the cage.

Old world mice, rats, and hamsters have maximum lifespans of under 5 years. Similar New World species such as deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) or white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) live up to 8 years, and wood rat (Neotoma albigula), and desert wood rat (Neotoma lepida) live up to 10 years.

Even when being cared for by humans, they don't usually live much longer than 7.5 years. Last Wednesday, Pat earned a Guinness World Record as the world's oldest known mouse. He was nine years and 209 days old…and counting.

Not only can mice have multiple babies at once, they also can have multiple litters each year. Female house mice can have up to six pups every three weeks and can give birth to a second liter as early as 25 days after the first. In one year, they can give birth to approximately 35 babies.

Each “mouse mother” can be pregnant up to ten times per year, meaning each female mouse can produce nearly 300 baby mice over the course of her two- to three-year lifespan. In summary: mice breed often, they breed rapidly and they do not stop breeding unless they are exterminated.

The fecundity of female mice declines with both age and number of prior pregnancies. Few inbred females of any strain, with the exception of FVB/N, will produce more than five litters (Green and Witham, 1991).
