Last year, I had the privilege of introducing my toddler to this tradition. She wasn't sure what to think. In November, Sinterklaas comes in on a boat to every major town in the Netherlands. The story goes that he comes from Spain with his helpers. They help him with presents, wish lists, treats, and such. They have black soot on their faces because they come through the chimney to deliver the presents. After they arrive on a boat, Sinterklaas parades through the town on a white horse. This is a very fun celebration for the kids with lots of candy and special Sinterklaas holiday music.
After he arrives, Sinterklaas visits schools, hospitals, and shopping centers for three weeks or so. Children try to be at their best behavior during this time, as the story goes that Sinterklaas and his helpers may take you back to Spain if you're behaving poorly. Then on St. Nicholas Eve, we set our shoe by the chimney (or the front door) to receive presents from our Dutch Santa. We set our shoes there, sing a song, leave something for his horse inside our shoes, and the next morning we have a small present and some candy in our shoe.
Just like Christmas, some of this holiday has become very commercialized. Dutch stores are full of presents and Dutch Santa holiday snacks and craft supplies to make 'surprises' for the holiday. My grandparents would always go all out on December 5th. The 'helpers' set out a sack full of present outside the door, then knock really loudly on the door and run away, and the kids then can open the sack full of presents. It is a big family gathering that is so much fun!
Dutch kids believe in Sinterklaas until they are around 12 years of age and head off to high school (we don't have middle school and go straight from elementary to high school). In high school, the celebration changes to something you can compare to the Dirty Santa/White Elephant game we play in the U.S. We draw names, and then make a surprise with a present and a rhyme on the inside of that crafted thing. For example, if somebody is really into doing their hair, you would craft a giant hairspray bottle, put a present and a rhyme inside, and exchange these 'surprises' on the set date somewhere before December 5th, because that is the date that Sinterklaas goes back to Spain.
There is no goodbye parade for Sinterklaas or anything as big as the welcome parade, but after that date, everyone puts up their Christmas trees.
This Sinterklaas tradition is a Dutch cultural tradition that I want to pass on to Nora. It is one of my favorite ones that I miss the most, even as a grown-up. How we are going to celebrate this while we live in the United States is something I am not quite sure about, since it is not something most Americans celebrate. Thought, some Episcopalian churches do celebrate something very similar by teaching people about St. Nicholas.
We also have a tiny Dutch community of about 10 people living in Memphis, so maybe we will start something with that group. They had a celebration for it in the past, but they have not celebrated it since I have been in Memphis. It may be something that is worth starting up again, now that I have a young child.

Saint Nicholas of Myra (traditionally 15 March 270 – 6 December 343), also known as Nicholas of Bari, was an early Christian bishop of Greek descent from the maritime city of Patara in Anatolia (in modern-day Antalya Province, Turkey) during the time of the Roman Empire.
( Dutch: [sɪnt ˈnikoːlaːs]) is a legendary figure based on Saint Nicholas, patron saint of children. Other Dutch names for the figure include De Sint ("The Saint"), De Goede Sint ("The Good Saint") and De Goedheiligman ("The Good Holy Man").
Tegenwoordig kennen we vooral Sinterklaas en de Kerstman. Dat zijn een soort broers, of in ieder geval naaste familieleden. De Kerstman is de Amerikaanse versie van Sinterklaas, wat duidelijk blijkt uit zijn naam: Santa Claus is een verbastering van het Nederlandse Sint Nicolaas of Sinterklaas.
Do other countries celebrate Sinterklaas too? Sinterklaas isn't just a Dutch tradition - in fact, similar celebrations exist all over Europe, but many of the countries that recognise and celebrate Sinterklaas do so on December 6. Some parts of the Dutch Caribbean also celebrate the holiday.

In the Netherlands, where we're based, Sinterklaas is technically a celebration of the St.Nicholas feast day on December 6, while Christmas, as its name indicates, is intended to observe Christ's supposed birth on December 25.

Naast Nicolaas van Myra lijkt de Noordse oppergod Odin (of Wodan) een inspiratiebron voor Sinterklaas geweest te zijn. Odin bezat het achtbenige paard Sleipnir, waarop hij door de hemel reed. Sinterklaas rijdt op zijn schimmel over de daken.
Hij is geboren in het jaar 280 en is overleden in het jaar 343. Sint Nicolaas deed goed werk voor kinderen en werd daarom een kindervriend genoemd. Hij is jarig op 6 december en dus niet op 5 december.
Wanneer is Sinterklaas geboren? Sinterklaas werd in het jaar 280 geboren, als zoontje van rijke ouders. Zijn geboorteland is niet Spanje, zoals iedereen denkt. Sint kwam ter wereld in Patara, in wat nu Turkije is.
Bari werd overheerst door de Spanjaarden. Dit kan een reden zijn waarom wij in Nederland zeggen dat Sinterklaas uit Spanje komt. De legende van Sint Nicolaas kan ook naar Nederland overgewaaid zijn in de periode van de Spaanse koning Filips II, die tot 1715 heerste in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden.
Het Kasteel van Sinterklaas in Helmond is waar jong en oud zich kan laten betoveren. Het begint al als je de mooie poorten binnenkomt. Het kasteel ligt op de achtergrond, maar daarvoor speelt zich al van alles af.
Het is met mythische figuren altijd lastig om aan te wijzen waar ze nu precies vandaan komen. Feit is natuurlijk dat Sinterklaas eerder bestond dan de kerstman. En onze Sint heeft wel degelijk invloed gehad op het ontstaan van de bolle ho-ho-ho-roeper.
Nicolaas van Myra, bisschop van het plaatsje Myra in het zuidwesten van het huidige Turkije, stierf op 6 december 342. Vanaf de dertiende eeuw wordt zijn naamdag gevierd. Pas later worden daar in het bijzonder kinderen bij betrokken.
Zelfs aan de Engelse naam voor de Kerstman zie je dat de twee op z'n minst familie zijn. Maar het antwoord op de vraag wie eerst was, is volgens professor Geybels heel eenvoudig: dat is Sinterklaas.
Oorsprong. Vermoedelijk is de Amerikaanse Santa Claus een mengeling van de Britse Father Christmas en de Nederlandse Sinterklaas, hoewel ook gebruiken van Duitse emigranten, zoals Knecht Ruprecht en Pelzmärtel, en het Duitse gebruik om cadeaus tijdens de kerst te geven, van invloed kunnen zijn geweest.
Sint-Nicolaasdag is de gedenkdag van de heilige Nicolaas van Myra. In het westers christendom en in Griekenland valt deze dag op 6 december, in het oosters christendom volgens de juliaanse kalender op 19 december. De dag wordt in verschillende vormen feestelijk gevierd in een groot deel van Europa.
