Tutorial (2024)

“ *The tall captain shrugs, grinning widely.* Aye, no need for formality, friend. I'm the same as ye. I'm merely pullin' yer bicorn. One thing I won't be jokin' about though is yer trainin'! ”
― Cap'n Orlandeau

The Tutorial is a recently released feature in Deepwoken that is meant for new players, teaching them the game's mechanics and the Castaway backstory via characters and hints. It is accessible in Fragments of Self by talking to The Captain located at the center, leaning back on an arch.

Tutorial Progression[]

To start the tutorial, the player must talk to The Captain, agree to 'get their memory jogged' and wipe their character. Only after creating their character will they be properly introduced to the tutorial.

The player will wake up at the lower front of a departing pirate ship known as The Scoundrel's Bounty, bigger than an Ironclad. This is where the player gets to know the movement controls and interactions before jumping down to the cannon bay where they get to see Cap'n Orlandeau, the presumed captain of the ship. Speaking with Orlandeau, the player gets scolded for sleeping on the job and their lack of combat experience, which the captain proposes to sharpen up. The player will be instructed to light attack, critical attack, parry and block in the air before having to parry a slash by the captain, this is designed to teach the player Combat Mechanics. Shortly after, the player will need to craft a Campfire Pit with sticks and make a fire. The player will then be given a Vanguard Brace to learn about Armor. Both the captain and the player agree to moving to the next room.

Coming out of the cannon bay, Orlandeau will inform the player of the Luminant's currency, Notes. He further demonstrates currency by giving the player his Emerald and telling them to sell it at an Antiquarian, soon buying a Dumbbell to simulate purchasing items and training with said Dumbbell, levelling up their Strength by one. The captain informs the player about Power and its advantages before going up to the upper deck. If the player is Attunementless and the first/second strongest Attribute is Strength, it will give you your third strongest attribute Training Item OR a random Training Item upon spawn.

The captain sends the player off to talk to the fellow crewmembers. Speaking to all of the crewmembers and returning to the captain will teach you about Talents and Mantras, being given a Mantra of the player's respective attunement or attribute. Shortly after, the chanting of the Gideshu March can be heard, and what the captain assumes to be the Authority explodes the upper deck with cannons, downing the player with their vision fading black. The backstory concludes with the player presumably washing up ashore, being rescued by either of the starter NPCs.

Talking to Kelsius inside of the Temple of the Blade's library will give you unique dialogue and instantly complete his quest, but you will not recieve a free mantra hand due to already getting one during the tutorial.

Trivia[]

  • Orlandeau's Emerald is worth 30 Notes.
  • By leaving during the tutorial you can redo it, which has a number of effects in it. The most notable one is Orlandeau's Emerald being renamed to "Orlandeau's Pity Emerald", it's description going from "The non-chaotic variety" to "Smart one, huh?" and being worth only 1 Notes, to avoid the player using this as an infinite money glitch (found randomly through experimenting). You will only be given "Orlandeau's Pity Emerald" once.
  • You cannot sell the Dumbbell to the antiquarian as it would be a net profit of 2 notes.
  • By blocking off the door to the Antiquarian's area, Orlandeau will not move, and instead stay below deck.
